Hi everyone, the poem that I will be doing on is Children in the Darkness.

The poem reflects on how the lives of children were during the Vietnam War. The children live in darkness and nobody teaches them how to fight or study. The children don’t have a chance to study and learn and they have no freedom. The children live in war every day, fleeing from attacks and waiting for their doomsday.

The poem is written at a soldier’s point of view, the soldier was in during the war and he was sitting in my hotel room in Saigon just before Christmas, he looked at the TV and the news was on. I did not know what the news reader was saying but in the background was a photo of a small boy with a helmet and an automatic rifle. The soldier felt that the children was mistreated and they have no freedom.

The situation and setting is during the war period when everyone is afraid and tries to escape from getting killed in the war. There is darkness everywhere and no freedom.

The language used in the poem is repetition and metaphors; I find this poem disturbing as the children in the poem have lost freedom and are escaping from death during the war. The children do not have a chance to study or be able to defend themselves.

Naturalist: Mockingbird

Mockingbirds are brighter than all other birds and they knew how to imitate others. Their calls are to attract females more than to ward of males. It can also recognise people in less than 30seconds so it is attractly quite dangerous to provoke a mockingbird. It lives in North America and likes to sing in warm moon light. The mockingbird's main diet are insects and they will also be attracted by plants, for example, holly, mulberries, raspberries, Virginia creeper, blackberries, dogwood, elderberries, hackberry, brambles, pyracantha, cotoneaster, grapes or figs. The mockingbird's voice can imitate a dog's barking as well as a piano, so you can hear easily and know when you are in danger from the voice of a mocking bird. Mockingbirds require open grassy areas for their feeding, thick, thorny shrubs for hiding the nest and high perches where the male can sing and defend his territory. Gardens are among its favorite dwelling places especially if winter berries are available.

Oh discrimination,
there's no right or wrong about it,
oh discrimination,
we must be aware about it.

Positive d'crimination
we must have faith in it,
there's a place for everyone in this world,
there's no doubt about it.

You can be black or white or yellow or green,
you can still make friends with me!

After taking the test, I found that i am actually musical and naturalist. I am musical as i love music, I would make music everywhere i go and whatever i am holding. Sometimes, I even use music to help me memorise things, besides making music, I also like to observe the environment. I love the crispy fresh air around me and I hate those who pollute the environment. I actually predicted the result during the test and now i know better about myself. There are some points about me that are not sufficient and I will try to change it. I will also continue to work hard on my good areas and excel on them.

^^

Note: Malay words are translated into english.

Malay lessons, some of us hate it, while some of us love it. It may sound alien to most of us at first, but now we got used to it. As for me, I tried out the things taught during lessons, but it end up having a lot of bloopers. For example, I was buying sodas at the grocery store, and tried using malay to speak to the malay shop keeper.

Me: "There is a total of five cans here."

Uncle: "Ok."

Me (trying to act pro): "One can is fifty so five cans is twenty-five."

Before I even realise my mistake, the uncle and other customers who lnew malay began laughing out loud. When I realise my mistake, I quickly say sorry and ran out of the shop. I was so embarassed that I went all the way to NTUC to get my sodas.

Some of us like Deng Hang and Marc who learns Malay anticipate Malay lessons but I don't, for I'm afraid that I will become the laughing stock during the lesson. The following are dumb mistakes that I made:

Ms Mastura: "What is your name?"

Me: "Ms Mastura."

And

Ms Mastura: "What is my name?"

Me: "Me?"

Nonetheless, I still have to study malay, so I guess I have to work hard on it!
